Peruvian or Andean maca is a plant which grows in special conditions in Peru. The different varieties of maca occur naturally as the plant develops, affecting the colour of the roots. These colours suggest that some qualities or effects will increase, but all variants start from the same properties. The three types of maca you can find are yellow, red and black maca.
Is the most common and abundant, and as such is the most widely used as a health product. This variety can be entirely yellow or a whitish shade and can be up to 60% of the annual harvest of the plant. It offers the basic qualities of maca, such as increased libido, improved fertility, aphrodisiac properties, increased energy, iron and calcium intake, relief of menopausal symptoms, etc.
Red maca acquires a reddish colour in its roots, but can also be pink or purple. It represents up to 25% of the annual harvest and is mainly characterised by its higher level of antioxidants than the other two varieties. In addition, it maintains the same properties as yellow maca, combined with an increase in anti-tumour effects and greater effects for men with prostatic hyperplasia.
Black maca is the rarest of the three. It produces a grey or black shade in the root, and is associated with a direct increase in several effects, based on the same properties as any other variety of the plant. Only 15% of the annual harvest is black maca and it is thought to have a greater effect in terms of male fertility. Although it is more often recommended for men, women can also enjoy the benefits of black maca as it also has a significant effect on memory improvement, protection of bone structure etc.
